The Mobile Weather Response Unit is a program under Science and Engineering to provide real-time situational awareness, scientific data collection, and emergency response. The program operates through highly-mobile storm hunting, spotting, and chasing Mobile Response Units and Task Forces that are cross-trained in emergency response. These units are able to provide immediate information and response during and following a severe weather event.
In addition to emergency response training, the Mobile Weather Response Unit utilizes personnel that are trained Storm Spotters through the National Weather Service SKYWARN program.
Joint Task Force 2
Joint Task Force 2, also called Task Force Overdrive, is a joint Mobile Weather Response Unit (MRU) and Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) unit based out of Sector 2. The purpose of the unit is to provide 4×4 special vehicle capability and storm chasing / weather spotting for Emergency Response Force 1. TF2 personnel and vehicles may be called upon for emergency response, severe weather operations / situational awareness, and to provide offroad recovery services. The unit often conducts patrols of offroad vehicle areas for training and to provide assistance when needed or requested. The unit is open to both Rated and Non-Rated personnel and has three types of membership: personnel with vehicles (V), personnel who act as crew (C), and personnel who are vehicle operators (O). Personnel may join the unit as multiple membership types.
Currently, MRU does not have an assigned uniform. Because its units are primarily Task Forces, it was decided that members will wear the uniform and follow the hygiene and appearance requirements of their parent command or unit. However, because MRU is considered “Cavalry” within the Central Aid Agency and utilizes Cavalry organizational structure; personnel are authorized to wear approved Cavalry uniform hats with their regulation duty uniforms.Â
